I tried contacting Apple Support in order to enquire before purchasing, but the person I chatted to told me the bizarre workaround was to connect the Apple TV 4k to my Mac via a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter instead of connecting it to my Samsung TV. So… I'd do the 'right' thing & buy an Apple TV 4k, except that I've been told that it doesn't support streaming content from iTunes libraries any more, as the old "Computers" app used to do. The problem is that if the Internet is not working, I can't stream the movies from Apple's servers, so the obvious workaround would be to view the downloaded versions on my Mac.īut the Apple TV 3rd generation doesn't (apparently) stream in 4k, so I'm just seeing HD versions of the movies - not 4k.Īnd the Apple TV app doesn't have any access to my computer (AFAIK). I have recently purchased several 4k movies, & downloaded them to my computer… The TV is a 4k Samsung which has the Apple TV app. Do I need to repurchase to get 4K? I sure hope not!! Assuming no repurchase needed, will just deleting the HD version from my local storage and re-downloading get me the 4K version?ĭoes the Apple TV 4k still have a "Computers" app? I have an Apple TV 3rd generation (A147), which has a "Computers" app that lets me stream my iTunes Library content to my TV. (2) I already own many HD movies purchased from iTunes which are also available in 4K. I assume that a 4K Apple TV will automatically get the 4K stream if streaming is indeed my only option to display 4K content? Is this true? If not, how do I download in 4K? I see no settings in the macOS AppleTV app (where I typically purchase content) to specify this. I have read that Apple only allows you to stream 4K content, and you cannot download it for later playback. (1) I prefer download+replay to streaming for reasons I will not get into here. I have found some info elsewhere but the sources are a bit old and I want to make sure I understand the current circumstances. Before spending this $$ I'd like to resolve a couple of questions. I am considering upgrading my Apple TV hardware to 4K, along with my TV of course.
